In this issue of Photostory Weekly we focus on the story “My White Night” by Scarlett Hooft Graafland that received an Honorable Mention from the 2009 PhotoStory jury. Visual artist Graafland travels to isolated parts of the world to give her artistic response to different cultures and landscapes. During these long-term projects she stays with local people to research and adapts their daily lives. Being the art-director of her own concept-based series she uses performance, sculpture and photography to create surreal scenes. She ends up with visual attractive photographs that draw the attention to more profound topics such as generation gaps and climate change. Last year Graafland showed her images at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen. Viewbook invited photographer Lotte Stekelenburg to share her view on the series “My White Night”. Enjoy and feel free to react in the comments below.

Welcome to the first issue of Photostory Weekly. Every week we pick one submission from the Viewbook Photostory archive and provide it with background. We are starting off with Francesco Giusti's story SAPE, and with good reason. His portrait story about the elegant Congelese 'Sapeurs' earned the first prize in the Viewbook Photostory 2009 Awards. Then, just a few months later, the series won a World Press Photo Award. Now it will be exposed to the world with the traveling World Press Photo Exhibition. We asked photographer and writer Miranda Gavin to share her view on the SAPE series and talk with Francesco about how it all came together. Enjoy, and feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below.

Tokyo Monogatari is a remarkably imaginative narrative that Ilse Leenders submitted to the Viewbook PhotoStory contest last year. It earned her the second jury prize in the conceptual category. This summer the series will be exhibited at Fotosommer Stuttgart 2010. We asked Lauren Heinz, photography critic and editor of FOTO8, to give us her view on the work and talk with Ilse about how it was created.
